Centenary Poster

Dr Maria Montessori (1870 –1952)
©Created by the Primary Children of The Port Elizabeth Montessori School, South Africa
Designed by Bretten-Anne Moolman-Heath
This is the poster created by the children of our Primary/Elementary School for the Montessori Centenary year in 2007.
It is our hope that our poster will be sold to people and schools all over the world, to help spread the message of Maria Montessori everywhere.
The poster is the result of an art project done in the school under the direction of the children’s art teacher, Bretten-Anne Moolman (herself an acclaimed artist). When the children began the project, they were each given a “piece of the portrait” – that is one square to paint/colour in. Some of them did not know that it was in fact part of Maria Montessori’s portrait – they just saw lines on a page and coloured them in.
When everyone’s work was complete, Bretten-Anne put the pieces together to form the portrait. The results were unbelievable and we decided to use all three versions to create The Centenary Poster.
An initial version was given as a gift to Dr Marlene Barron as a thank you for visiting South Africa and she has told us it hangs proudly in Westside Montessori School.
We are extremely proud of this work. The poster can be ordered directly from the School. Should you wish to place an order, please contact us on info@pemontessori.co.za
Community and Outreach Projects
As part of our School’s community outreach work, in conjunction with the Montessori Academy in Pretoria, we have helped set up a Montessori-based programme for a small school in the Karoo. Our used, but still functional, equipment is donated to the school and Sam and Heidi (from the Academy) provide training for the staff.
The children in the primary section of the school, particularly the 9-12s (Upper Primary), are actively involved in various aspects of community service through the year.
